Caravan Theft - Rural Crime Team Update

It’s fair to say that caravans are meant to go on holiday… but not without their owners! 

Last week, a caravan was reported stolen in Northamptonshire whilst the owners were out doing a weekly shop. Thanks to some fantastic partnership working between Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Rural Crime Teams, the caravan was located and recovered within 24 hours and, thankfully, returned to its rightful owner.

This is a great example of how working together across county borders can make a real difference when rural crime occurs. Sharing information, acting quickly and supporting one another can help us get stolen property back where it belongs.

Caravan owners — help us to help you!

A few simple security measures can make your caravan a much less attractive target and, importantly, make it easier for us to identify and recover if it is stolen:

• Consider using a wheel clamp and hitch lock — preferably security-rated products.

• Use additional security devices where possible, such as a ground anchor or chain.

• Keep a record of your caravan’s VIN/chassis number and any unique identifying features.

• Take plenty of photographs, including the interior and exterior, and keep them somewhere safe.

• Consider fitting a GPS tracker and make sure it is well concealed.

• Mark your caravan using property marking products and display appropriate warning stickers.

• If storing your caravan away from home, think carefully about the security of the storage location.

• Most importantly, keep your caravan details and photographs to hand — the more information we have, the easier it can be to identify and recover your property.

And remember: if your caravan disappears, please don’t assume it’s simply gone on an unscheduled holiday!
